Research

In the SynBEE lab, we aim to develop new enzyme engineering technologies for the production of novel and value-added natural products. We also aim to develop new synthetic biology tools including genome/transcriptome editing techniques and RNA devices for gene expression regulation for wide applications in the industry and in the clinic. Clinical applications will particularly be focused on the development of probiotics for the diagnosis of various diseases and therapeutics for chronic diseases.

New Enzymes for Natural Products

We are aiming to create new enzymes by directed evolution or computer-assisted mutagenesis. Such enzymes can be used to produce novel medicinal natural products that can be used as drugs (e.g., antibiotics, anticancer agents, and antifungal agents).

Synthetic Biology Tools

Reprogramming microorganisms is important for both industrial and biomedical applications. We are aiming to develop new synthetic biology tools including genome/transcriptome editing tools or metabolite biosensors.

Live Therapeutics & Diagnostics

Using the principle of synthetic biology, we are aiming to develop engineered probiotic bacteria for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. We are also aiming to develop new tools for microbiome engineering.
